Dr. Messina was born on April 23rd, 1910 here in New York City to Sicilian
immigrants. Ever since she was young, science had sparked her interest.
She grew up to become one of the few female micro-paleontologists in
the world. Messina is best known for her famous work on foraminifera,
(also called forams), which are single-celled and shelled protists, and
ostracoda, a crustacean group.
